MESSAGE FROM THE COMMISSIONER

Round 1 is in the books, Vancouver is the only lower seed to win and it’s not much of an upset as none of the series goes more than 6 games while Florida has a sweep. Round 2 looks like 4 battles of the big boys and should see some much closer matchups and we’ll see if any of the lower seeds can knock off their division winner. Here are the matchups.

Prince of Wales

Arizona vs St. Louis
NY Islanders vs NY Rangers

Campbell Conference

Boston vs San Jose
Vancouver vs Florida

The Prince of Wales has two very different matchups as the Coyotes and Blues who were separated by a single point in the Horton will battle it out and likely this one will go 6 of 7 games with the St. Louis goaltending likely the difference. Our other matchup has the Rangers and the Islanders battling it out for supremacy in NY, but these teams were far apart in the standings and it will take a huge effort from the Isles to even keep this one close against the Rangers offense who likely will be the difference.

The Campbell conference has a rematch of last year in the Lemieux as Vancouver tries again to knock off Florida who continues their quest to win a cup and not fall short. Ullmark gave up just 3 goals in 4 games in round 1 and this will make it awfully tough for the Canucks to even keep this series close. San Jose and Boston ended the regular season tied in points and this series will likely be just as close with the goaltending and defense of the Sharks battling the offense of Kucherov and Kaprizov for the Bruins who should win a tight contest.

Here is a quick reminder of the playoff usage limits as well as a list of overused players and penalties for them during the playoffs.

Overused Players

Arizona – Chandler Stephenson – 3 games over, Must miss games 1-2 each series

NY Islanders - Jacob Markstrom - 3 games over, Must miss games 1-2 each series

St. Louis - Jesse Puljujarvi - 10 games over, Not eligible for playoffs
          - Rasmus Ristolainen – 2 games over, Must miss game 1 each series
          - Gabriel Vilardi – 2 games over, Must miss game 1 each series

PLAYOFF USAGE LIMITS FOR SKATERS:

        1) 60 or more NHL games can play all playoff games (per series)
        2) 55-59 NHL games      6 playoff games
        3) 50-54 NHL games      5 playoff games
        4) 40-49 NHL games      4 playoff games
        5) 30-39 NHL games      3 playoff games
        6) 20-29 NHL games      2 playoff games
        7) 10-19 NHL games      1 playoff game

      PLAYOFF USAGE LIMITS FOR GOALTENDERS
Goalies with 1-14 games may only dress as backups
Goalies with 15-19 games may only start 1 game per series (but may dress as backups in all other games)
Goalies with 20-24 games may only start 2 games per series (but may dress as backups in all other games)
Goalies with 25-29 games may only start 3 games per series (but may dress as backups in all other games)
Goalies with 30+ games may start all playoff games in a series (or may be dressed as a backup)

Injury backups may only play if the computer pulls the starter due to an injury OR the team is down by 4 or more goals at any time in the game (a mercy rule basically). The second part may be accomplished by a computer setting for road games that is defined as a team being down by 4 or more goals OR by a home coach making this decision when his team is down by 4 or more goals.

Round 2 of the playoffs is ready to go and the updated league file and Excel file is on the website.  Remember that all injuries this year are coaches decisions BUT all players are limited to the exact number of NHL games from last year, so plan accordingly.  If you are sending the same lineup for all 8 games then just a regular coach should work. If you want to set specific lineups for each game, then you need to use the Daily Lineups as it gives you a lot more flexibility. As soon as you have your coach set for your first 4 road games, please send that out to the list (and list who the coach is for so it is easier for teams to keep the ones they need).  Also, I would ask you PLEASE include your 4 home strats as well both for your sake and mine as if I have to sim your home games for any reason I will just let the game set up your strat if none is defined and you will have to deal with any penalties later on.  I am going to continue using the strat file page and upload everyones coaches to the website like I did in the past so they are easy to find when needed.

**** IMPORTANT  - Action PC Game File Update dated 10/16/2024.

You need to send out game exports as well as boxscores for all 4 home games by the second Sunday of the block at 9 pm This is MANDATORY, both the exports AND boxscores please.   Game summaries are nice, even if it’s just one quick comment for all 4 games, just adds to the league and makes it easier for everyone to see what is going on.  If I do not receive game exports after sending updates on Saturday and Sunday, I will send one more request directly about an hour before the deadline on Sunday.  Unless I get a request for an extension of time, I will wait til the deadline and about 30 minutes later I will sim games so I can get new files out before I go to bed Sunday night.
