I. MESSAGE
FROM THE COMMISSIONER
The Super
Bowl was a great game (see write up below) that went to OT for a back to back
win for the Indianapolis Colts who come back from a 22-13 deficit in the fourth
quarter. Congratulations to Sri
Gullapalli on putting up his second straight and third overall in the big game
and as well to Dave Stewart who took a squad of players that struggled at times
early in the season to the final game and a fourth quarter lead until they
finally succumbed to the Aaron Rodgers comeback.
With the season over,
just a few things left to accomplish. Right now I am trying to ascertain who
will return for next season and what openings I need to fill so please let me
know asap what your plans are if I haven’t heard from you already.
Looking for ideas for the ballot if you think we need any rule changes,
additions or updates that will make the league better.
Please feel free to toss fully thought ideas either to the list or to me
so we can put together a ballot by the middle of the month.
This year we are going to do the awards a bit differently since they
don’t appear to be a favorite of most of the league, so may look for a little
help on these, but will get something done over the next couple of weeks.
Finally, I will be doing the draft lottery probably tomorrow, will let you know
for sure but will need a couple of guys to help out since my team is involved
this year again.
Keep in mind
that trading will not open up until the new game is released.
You can talk trades and throw out flyers with who you want to move, but
nothing can be sent to the list until I announce it so that we are all working
from the same baseline.
I am looking
for potential owners right now if you know anyone who is interested in the
league, I need an owner in Dallas at least and would like some names to get
ready in case we have more openings after the season.
Game files are located on the website for the final regular season files.
Please make sure you get started on game contacts asap, home teams should
make contact by Wednesday and the game should be set up no later than Thursday
of each week.
I can’t
stress enough that you need to IMMEDIATELY send me your game export when the
game is complete. Send your write up
later on, that’s fine, but I MUST have the game export as soon as the game ends
or I’ll have to sim the game to keep things moving along if it is missing at the
deadline.
***There is a new game update available on the website, dated
1/17/18 ***
Don’t forget,
if you lose a player for 2 or more games, you can ask for an injury replacement,
but it must be done the same week as the injury, so don’t wait, get those
requests in right away and take advantage, especially the teams who are already
challenged for the amount of games they have to work with.
Also, be sure you give me enough names as the more injuries the more
likely someone else already grabbed the guy you want.
Reminder that
you MUST send a boxscore and writeup to the league after each game.
The home team is responsible for this, but either team can do it, as long
as it does get done. Also, you MUST
send me the game export immediately after the game is complete.
It takes about 30 seconds, so I shouldn’t have to chase you down for that
file after a game, just get it in right away so I don’t have to guess whether a
game has happened or not.

II. News from
Around the League
Indianapolis Colts – 28 vs Detroit
Lions – 22
Indy wins it's second
consecutive SB (third overall) over Detroit in a thrilling fashion. The MVP of
the game was Rodgers, who threw for 246 yards and 2 TD, while rushing for 54
yards on 5 carries. Roethlisberger was the top performer for Detroit, as he
threw for 206 yards and 2 TD's. The end result would have been different if not
for Detroit's Kicker Novak missing 2 FG's and 2 extra points. Not to be left
behind, Indy's kicker Prater missed one FG and an extra point.
The game started on a good
note for Indy, as they got the opening kickoff and marched all the way to
Detroit 20 yard line, Detroit defense buckled up and stopped Indy from gaining
anymore yardage on next three plays. Indy had to settle for a field goal
to go up 3-0. Detroit on its first possession has its way with Indy's defense
going 67 yards on 10 plays, and the drive was capped of by Asiata's 2 yards TD.
Novak misses the extra point to make it 6-3 Detroit.Coach Stewart used a nice
mix of Forte runs and short passes to move the ball. Indy on its next possession
needing a score uses its running game and nice play action passes to get down to
Detroit 2 yard line, on 2 and goal Kuhn gains 1 yard, Rodgers tried to sneak on
3rd down but was stopped for no gain, Indy decides to go for 4th down as they
figured FG's would not do it. Kuhn jumps over the pile on 4th down to put Indy
up by 4. Detroit answers immediately with 6 play 75 yard drive. On 1st and 10
from Indy 33, with Indy defense playing basic man, Big Ben finds Nelson for a 33
yard TD on long crossing pattern. Detroit goes up by three points.
Disaster stuck for Indy on
the ensuing possession as Ginn fumbles the ball after gaining a first down at
Indy's 39 yard line. With short field position Big Ben marches his troops
downfield and finds Williams for a 10 yard TD, to put Detroit up by 9, Novak
misses his second extra point. To this point in the game Indy defense had no
answer for Detroit's offense. Indy punts the ball back (Indy's only punt in the
game) on the next possession and finally Indy's defense makes Detroit punt for
the first time after Griffen sacks Big Ben for a 7 yard loss on 1st down and
stuffs a screen pass to Tolbert on next play. With 1:51 left before halftime
Indy moves the ball methodically and settles for an 38 yard FG. Score at
halftime 19-13 Detroit.
Detroit get the ball back
after halftime and was sacked on the first play by Wilkerson for 6 yard loss,
staring at 3rd and 16 from its own 28 yard line somehow Big Ben finds Williams
for 56 yard gain on a long crossing pattern against a dime deep zone defense.
Indy defense regains its composure and forces Detroit to settle for a FG, score
22-13 Detroit. On the next possession Indy drives all the way to Detroit's 31
yard line, only for Prater to miss a 49 yard FG. At this point Indy faithful
started losing hope that this might not be the year. Detroit gets a nice field
position and Coach Stewart feeling good started to kill the clock with Asiata
runs, Indy defense once again forces Detroit to settle for a FG at it's own 27
yard line. With Coach Stewart starting to think about the number of diamonds in
his SB ring, Novak misses a 45 yard FG wide right. With 16 minutes left in the
game and trailing by 9 points, this is the opportunity Indy needed.
Indy moves the ball to
Detroit 38 on the next drive, but was stopped by Detroit on 3rd down, starting
at a 9 point deficit and 11:30 left in the game, Indy decides to go for 4th and
7. Rodgers finds Robinson for an 8 yard gain to keep Indy hopes alive. Detroit
defense eventually stops Indy at their own 16 yard line forcing Indy to settle
for a FG, score 22-16 Detroit. Next Detroit possession starts on a good note as
Big Ben finds TE Swoope for a 21 yard gain, Fasano commits a holding penalty on
next play, sensing an opportunity Indy sends Floyd blitzing, and he sacks Big
Ben for a 6 yard loss, with 2 and 26 Detroit tried to play it safe with short
passes but Indy defense didn't give an inch. Indy's offense gets the ball back
at its own 41 yard with 6:57 left in the game.
Rodgers takes advantage of
the good field position and moves the ball with a nice mix of runs and passes,
eventually capping the drive with a 12 yard TD pass to Dorsett, score tied 22 -
22, Prater walks on to the field to give Indy lead with 2:23 remaining in the
game, and he misses the extra point to swing the momentum back in Detroit favor.
On the next possession Detroit starts with two back to back delay of game
penalties, but outsmarts Indy defense with draw plays to gain 20 yards and the
first down. Detroit offense gains additional 15 yards to move the ball to Indy
36 yard line, Detroit call a TO with 21 second left in the game, Novak walks out
to give Detroit the lead and Coach Stewart his 3rd SB ring, like earlier
attempts he misses the FG pretty badly. Indy tries couple of long passes but
fails to gain any yardage, and the game goes to overtime.
Indy gets the ball back in
OT and starts the drive with solid runs from its RB's, Indy faces a 3rd down at
it's own 45 yard line, Rodgers find Powell for 6 yards to keep the drive going.
Indy converts one more 3rd when Rodgers finds Robinson for 15 yard gain. Indy
moves the ball all the way to Detroit 23 yard line, on 2nd 10 with Detroit
defense looking to stop the run, Rodgers finds Robinson for an 23 yard TD to
give Indy its 3rd SB.
This was Indy's second OT
Superbowl, having lost the previous one to Jacksonville. Coach Stewart for the
first time in his ISFL coaching career ends up on the losing side in the SB.
Thank to Dave for calling a
great game, it was probably the most exciting game i have been part of here at
ISFL given the stakes. Dave had me guessing the whole first half with little
success.
