I. MESSAGE FROM THE COMMISSIONER

The Super Bowl was all that was expected and we could have hoped for as Dave Stewart and his Detroit Lions come from behind to cap off their perfect 19-0 season with a tight 30-23 win over the equally worthy Tennesee Titans lead by Ashton Ewing in his first shot at the big game.  Files are located on the main page of the website for the end of the season.  Awards final ballot is located here - http://kwiksurveys.com/s/lqRNcsNN - please make sure to get your votes in.  Look for a preliminary ballot later on tonight.  Game files are located on the website for the end of the regular season.  Please make sure you get started on game contacts asap, home teams should make contact by Wednesday and the game should be set up no later than Thursday of each week.

I can’t stress enough that you need to IMMEDIATELY send me your game export when the game is complete.  Send your write up later on, that’s fine, but I MUST have the game export as soon as the game ends or I’ll have to sim the game to keep things moving along if it is missing at the deadline.

***There is a new game update available on the website, dated 08/14/15 ***

Don’t forget, if you lose a player for 2 or more games, you can ask for an injury replacement, but it must be done the same week as the injury, so don’t wait, get those requests in right away and take advantage, especially the teams who are already challenged for the amount of games they have to work with.  Also, be sure you give me enough names as the more injuries the more likely someone else already grabbed the guy you want.

Reminder that you MUST send a boxscore and writeup to the league after each game.  The home team is responsible for this, but either team can do it, as long as it does get done.  Also, you MUST send me the game export immediately after the game is complete.  It takes about 30 seconds, so I shouldn’t have to chase you down for that file after a game, just get it in right away so I don’t have to guess whether a game has happened or not.

II. News from Around the League

Super Bowl XIX

Lions and Titans bring the curtain down on ISFL 2015/16 with an excellent, memorable SB XIX played Sunday morning.

You'd expect to see the participants sporting excellent records, but these clubs show up with an eye popping combined 35-1 (talk about the irresistible force meeting the immovable object

Off we go and undefeated Lions come out whistling Hakuna Matata, kings of the NFC jungle pounce on early Tennessee turnovers and roar to 17-0 advantage.

But, remember the Titans?

Yes, Ashton and his giants of the AFC were just about to get started.

Patiently, behind an offensive line with run ratings of 9,7,8,7,8, RB's Terrance West and Khiry Robinson would pound Tennessee back into this ball game.

Titans light up the scoreboard with a fast paced, nine play, run oriented TD drive.

With 7+ minutes to play in first half, teams settle into this high profile battle.

A quick three and out for DET, Titans get just what they want as momentum seemingly starts to shift.

The sideline elation would evaporate quickly when Capt (America) Kuechly tags Khiry Robinson causing a fumble and TEN's third turnover of the half.

Fortunately for Titans, they have a few defensive super-hero's of their own, Mario Williams and his friends minimize the damage, Lions made to settle for the short field goal and a 20-7 lead.

Quickly, with time running down in the half, Rivers pushes the Titan offense down the field with barrage of short passes.

Hungry for the TD, but two passes into the endzone fall incomplete, Titans must also settle for the short FG.

Teams head to the break at 20-10 DET.

Taking the second half K-O, Rivers and company piece together a methodical nine play, fifty-six yard drive culminating in a Chandler Catanzaro 41 yd FG, slicing Lions lead to 20-13.

Trying to find their lost offensive rhythm, Lions earn a couple first downs, but fail to convert at the TEN 43.

A sideline punt re-starts the Titan offense from their own 11, we've got a one score battle percolating here.

Coach Ewing calls on his punishing ground game again, Titans launch 11 play drive (8 runs/3 passes) and power deep into DET territory as we enter the 4th quarter.

On 3rd and 7, a short completion brings out the chain gang at the DET 23, ball declared "just short" of first down and it's decision time for Titans.

Safe course opted for and PK Catanzaro cuts into DET lead again, 20-16 with full quarter to play.

Lion offense, lost in the jungle since early in the contest, still unable to find footing...three and out, definately not what we want, our lightweight defense forced to come right back to the battle.

Wasting no time, Titans push toward midfield, their measured pace of moving the ball would now "fireball forward" as Rivers hits Jordan Matthews, breaking tackles he races 51 yards, catapulting Tennessee into the lead (23-20)!

Tons of time left as Lions try to generate some offense, "try" being the key word, after one first down, a Chandler Jones sack on 3rd and 6 sends the DET punting unit back on the field.

With 8:48 remaining, surging Titans from their own 23 trap with RB Terrance West, he's met at the line by 3 blitzing LB's, Jonathan Newsome rips it out, DET recovers!

Titan's offense leave the field shaking their heads after suffering fourth turnover of the day.

Big Ben goes up top right away, with TEN looking run, Marshall breaks free for 23 yard lightning strike propelling Lions back into the lead (27-23)!

All the above took no time as TEN offense tee's it up again with over 8 minutes still to play.

KR Jacoby Jones puts Rivers and his offense in good shape with a 35 yd return, a 12 yard Robinson run moves the rock near midfield, but here, the Detroit defense makes it's stand.

Reviewing the game film;

1st down...good coverage downfield, check down pass to RB incomplete.

2nd down...TE Olsen double covered, med-out goes incomplete.

3rd down...blitzing LB and S hurry Rivers into throw away

No decision here, with 7:28 to play, Titans send out the punt team (4th and 10 from their 47) trailing 27-23.

Last week vs NO in CC game, I mentioned how long the 4th quarter seemed, man, it had nothing on this grinder

Was actually glad to see Ashton call for a sideline punt, gave me a chance to put the rosary beads down, still have little trust in Jeremy (4.9% fumble) Ross

>From the 11...you think I might give it to Lynch

I'll tell ya', a play action pass might be the call (let me consult with Pete Caroll , but I don't have the balls, if I'm gonna lose this game, it'll be because we were unable to maintain possession and then couldn't stop Ashton's offense, not for some tipped ball, pick six.

But, let's get a little cute (just a bit)...I've shown unbalanced "right" four times, ran that way each time, let's show it again, but this time run up the middle with Kalil and Fells leading the way.

TEN calls "Run", line "left" to counter as expected...Titans in 3-4, better on the edges than in the middle, nose a little soft and now slightly out of position..."Beast Mode" slams ahead for 12 gaining a little breathing room.

Getting off on the right foot so critical.

DET now runs left behind our "9's" with Latavius Murray, rumbling for 18 against 3-4 basic (awesome in his limited playoff role, 15 rushes for 147 yds in our three games).

Comes 2nd and 10 from DET 41, 5:55 remaining, Titans would now sustain a back breaking face mask penalty tacked onto 7 yd reception by Andrew Hawkins, the 22 yard total advance puts the Lions into business at the TEN 37.

DET manuevers to TEN 17, comes 4th and 1 and Novak called on for FG attempt, it's true and Lions lead by 7.

Another decent K-O return for Titans, but this time, Darius Slay flagged for illegal block, pinning Rivers and Co. back to their 11 yd line.

Down 7, 3:24 on clock, TEN has all timeouts available.

Operating from hurry-up, short run, inc, short completion and it's 4th and 1 from own 20 (2:22).

Decision time!

Tough one...to me, having the 3 TO's still in your pocket, makes punting an option, on the other hand, needing only one yard for first down and figuring the defense will play conservatively, protecting against the big play...maybe going for it would be the call...I know one thing for absolute sure, super easy to weigh options in hindsight, helluva different story when the bullets are flyin'

Titans punt, use 2/3 timeouts and force Lions to send it right back.

1:28 remains, down 7, 1 timeout...Rivers from his 20, drops back, looks downfield, fires...picked off by Chris Culliver and it's over...30-23 Detroit (Whew!)

Titans suffer FIVE turnovers vs Lions ZERO, but still had this game right in their sights, right down to the last agonizing moment!!

Ahh, Ashton my friend, what can I say...the usual "congrats on a great season" and "you played a great game" just doesn't get to the heart of it.

You're a great GM, year in and year out, in all your leagues, you put together top-notch talent, stock piling draft picks and always at the forefront of the successful teams.

The Action! Gods, ficklest of all false dieties, for some reason have smiled on my collection of characters this year.

Amazingly (I think), we trailed in the 4th quarter of all three playoff games and somehow emerged in each.

Quite a year without a doubt!

Big thanks to Mark and our entire membership for another great season of football simulation fun.

See everyone at the draft!

Best regards,

-dave
