I. MESSAGE FROM THE COMMISSIONER

Marty Golden and the Jacksonville Jaguars are the Super Bowl Champions this season with a 30-24 win over the Colts in the big game and they finish a perfect season with 19 wins and 0 losses. Congratulations to Sri Gullapalli of the Indianapolis Colts on a great season and playing in the big game for the first time.  Thanks to everyone for a great season, very smooth and it’s nice to see that everyone is planning on coming back for next season as all 28 teams voted in the ballot.

At this point, we are in the offseason, waiting on the new ratings and game so we can start working towards next years draft in April.  I will put out a schedule as soon as I know when we will have the game available and we’ll pick things up from there.  See you all end of March!

Ballot results were sent out with only one prop passing for a small change to injury substitutions.

I can’t stress enough that need to IMMEDIATELY send me your game export when the game is complete.  Send your write up later on, that’s fine, but I MUST have the game export as soon as the game ends or I’ll have to sim the game to keep things.

***A new game update is available dated 12/7, please get it from the ISFL website before you play any games this week.***

Don’t forget, if you lose a player for 2 or more games, you can ask for an injury replacement, but it must be done the same week as the injury, so don’t wait, get those requests in right away and take advantage, especially the teams who are already challenged for the amount of games they have to work with.  Also, be sure you give me enough names as the more injuries the more likely someone else already grabbed the guy you want.

Reminder that you MUST send a boxscore and writeup to the league after each game.  The home team is responsible for this, but either team can do it, as long as it does get done.  Also, you MUST send me the game export immediately after the game is complete.  It takes about 30 seconds, so I shouldn’t have to chase you down for that file after a game, just get it in right away so I don’t have to guess whether a game has happened or not.

II. News from Around the League

The Super Bowl was a great game with Jacksonville getting a hard fought win over a game Indianapolis Colts, 30-24, see the write up below!

Super Bowl XVI

It was a perfect day for football under the roof at the Luke (Lucas Oil Stadium). Even though the Colts were hosting, the Jags’ fans had travelled well. Based on the level of applause at the player introductions, it seemed like it was pretty close to a 50-50 split in terms of fan support. The fans were in for a treat as they got a game for the ages.

This game featured great matchups:

  1. Aaron Rodgers (ISFL MVP and AFC offensive player of the year) against Drew Brees (NFC offensive player of the year and 3rd and in MVP voting)
  2. Jared Allen (runaway AFC defensive player of the year) and against Demarcus Ware
  3. Marty Golden (Coach of the year) against Sri Gullapalli (Runner-up for Coach of the year)

At one time or another, all would have significant impacts in the game.

Vegas odds and consensus opinion had the Jags as the favorite but, in a pre-game interview, Coach Marty Golden said that he expected a tightly fought game against a very good coach and good team.

The captains gathered midfield for the coin toss. Coach Golden calls it right and elects to receive. Prater kicked it off to the Jags goaline and Sproles returned it to the 15 yard line and Super Bowl XVI was underway. The Jags break the offensive huddle and Drew Brees leads the Jags to the line. Drew Brees dropped back to pass and got the ball away just in time to hit Reggie Wayne with a 6 yard button hook as Jarred Allen hit him. That would be a sign of things to come. With 2nd and 4, the Jags got a first down with consecutive 3 yard runs from Super Bowl XI MVP, LaDainian Tomlinson, and Pierre Thomas. After the game’s initial first down, Drew Brees dropped back to pass and looked for Garcon over the middle but, just as Garcon was breaking open, Jared Allen broke through the blocking and sacked Brees for an 8 yard loss. On 2nd and 18, the Jags bring out the 3 wides. Brees drops back to pass and...no it’s a draw to Sproles. He almost instantly breaks through the line, makes an ankle breaking move to avoid Nick Barnett’s tackle and almost breaks away until Jeremiah Bell gets an angle and stops him for a 14 yard gain to set up a manageable 3rd and 4. The Jags go to the full house backfield and split out Sproles and Thomas. Drew Brees takes a 3 step drop and just gets it our before Jared Allen can sack him. Pierre Thomas picks it up off his shoelaces and turns it upfield for 8 yards and another first down at the Jags 33 yard line. Pierre Thomas then carries the ball 3 times for 24 yards and 2 more first downs. With the Jags driving, Jared Allen gets his 2nd sack of the drive doing his best to stop the Jags’ drive all on his own. On second and long again, the Jags and Brees look again to Darren Sproles to pick up yards. Sproles picks up 11 yards down to the Colts 16 yard line to make it another 3rd and 4. At the 16 yard line, the Jags were looking to take it in for the TD but Jared Allen comes up big yet again as he sacks Drew Brees for the 3rd time. With 4th down and 11, the Jags felt like they had no choice but to go for the FG attempt. Henery kicks right down the pipe 4 for a 41 yard FG and the Jags get on the board 3-0 after a dominating 14 play 62 yard drive and using up 9:20 on the clock.

On the ensuing kickoff, Alex Henery kicked it off into the endzone to Ginn Jr. He decides to bring it out. With a quick burst, he’s immediately through the first wave of blockers. He broke a tackle, eluded the kicker and he was off to the races. Sean Jones was the last player with a chance but he didn’t have the angle and Ted Ginn Jr goes into the end zone for the TD. Prater kicks the extra point and the Colts take a 7-3 lead without even touching the ball on offense.

After the quick Colt score, Prater kicks off to Sproles but he can only bring it out to the Jags 8 yard line. The Jags pick up 3 first downs by dinking and dunking the ball down the field to the Jags 45 yard line. On a 2nd and 9, Brees drops back to pass and looks for Reggie Wayne over the middle. Before Brees can get the pass out, Jared Allen sacks him for a 10 yard loss to bring up 3rd and forever. Back to their own 35, Brees looks for Mike Williams but the Colts break up the pass and force a punt.

Weatherford gets the snap and punt it sideline to avoid Patrick Peterson. Peterson still gets it but he’s pinned against the sideline and can only pick up 6 before he is forced out of bounds by good punt coverage. With 4 seconds left in the first quarter, the Colts finally get their first snap on offense.

The Colts start with good field position on their own 41. They start out with a Ryan Grant run over the left side and pick up 11 yards. At that moment, the Jags had their worst fears confirmed. The Colts would be able to effectively run the ball and had Aaron Rodgers passing the ball. After Grant’s rush for the first down, the Colts mixed up the run and pass and converted another couple of first downs to get down to the Jags’ yard line. This time it was the Jags pressure that stepped up to stop a drive. On first and 10, Aaron Rodgers took a 3 step drop and looked for Greg Jennings on a sideline pattern. Before Jennings could break open, Trent Cole beat his man and sacked Rodgers for a 4 yard loss. Colts picked up 10 on 2nd and 3rd but were not able to pick up the first down and they are forced to try a long, 47 yard FG attempt. The snap...the hold...Matt Prater drives through the ball. It hooks slightly but it goes through to extend the Colt’s lead to 10-3.

The Jags start their next possession at the 29 after a 27 yard kick return by Sproles. Jags came out passing with Brees hitting Garcon and Sproles for 15 and 11 yards down to the Colts 45 yard line. After an incomplete pass to Garcon and a big stuff by Jared Allen, Sproles took the handoff on 3rd and 11 on the draw. He avoided by Justin Tuck and Nick Barnett and broke it for 20 yards down to the 26 yard line with 8:52 still remaining until half time. With Jared Allen still a big factor, the Jags use 3 step drops and hit Sproles and Garcon for 12 yards down to the 15. Now, inside the 20, the Jags decide to display their power running game. Pierre Thomas starts by bursting up the middle for 7 yards, dragging tacklers for 3 extra yards down to the 8 yard line. Brees hands it off to Thomas again, he runs over the left side and scores behind wipe out blocks by Logan Mankins and full back Alex Smith. With the Thomas score, the Jags tie the game at 10-10 and see their chance to take the lead again.

Problem is that Aaron Rodgers would have something to say about it. Sri mixed up his play calls but he leaned on Aaron Rodgers when it mattered. He went 5 out of 6 on the drive for 40 yards including converting 3 first downs on the drive. The Colts drove it down to the 13 yard line and had a 3rd and 5. The Jags were hoping to stop them and hold them to a FG but Aaron Rodgers took a 3 step drop then threw a quick slant to Roddy White for 7 yards and a big first down with 0:28 left in the half. The Jags D held strong on 1st and goal at the 6 when Darryl Washington swatted down a dump pass intended for Justin Forsett. On second, the Jags D had good tight man coverage but the problem with man coverage is that it can leave the QB run open. It certainly did in this case. Aaron Rodgers found a hole and ran untouched into the end zone to give the Colts a 17-10 lead going into the half.

The Colts started the second half with the ball at the 38 after a 34 yard return by Ted Ginn Jr. Jags D would step up big to stop the Colts. After Ed Dickson caught a quick slant for 8 yards, the Jags D looked for Kuhn and stuffed him on 3rd and 1 at the Colts 47 yard line. The Colts would then line up to go for it on 4th and 1. Initially, it was hard to tell if the Colts would actually run a play or just try to draw the Jags D offside. Rodgers surveyed the defense, gave hand signals to the wide receivers, verbal calls to the RBs and then finally snapped the ball with 2 seconds on the clock. The Jags would not go offside and were ready as Aaron Rodgers kept the ball and jumped over the pile looking to convert the 4th and 1. It was close but once the refs broke up the players, spotted the ball and took the measurement, they found that it was just short.

Off the huge stop, the Jags took over at the Colts’ 48 yard line down 17-10. Brees came out firing. He started by hitting Pierre Garcon on the pass to the sideline for 9 yards. On second and 1, Colts look for the run but Brees took a 5 step drop and hit Reggie Wayne over the middle for a 13 yard gain down to the Colts’ 26 yard line. After a run by Royster for 7 yards and a scramble by Brees for another 5 yards, Brees hit Sproles for an 11 yard gain to set up a 1st and goal at the 3. On the goal line, the Jags went to their 3 back set with Sproles and Tomlinson. Brees broke the huddle and the Jags came to the line. Tomlinson set up behind the full back with Sproles off set to the left. Saturday snaps the ball, Brees gets it and fakes the handoff to the right to Tomlinson. The whole defense keyed on Tomlinson but Brees didn’t hand the ball to him. Instead, he handed it off to Sproles. Sproles ran behind Mankins who picked off Anthony Spencer and Sproles got in for the TD. The score tied the game at 17-17 with 9:20 left in the 3rd.

The Jags rode the momentum of the huge 4th down stop on the Colts last drive to tie up the game and would continue riding the momentum through the 3rd. The Colts started off their drive at the 27 yard line. On 2nd down and 10, after an incomplete pass to Roddy White, Dwyer rushed for 5 yards and was about to break away but James Hall caught him by the facemask and dragged him down. After the 15 yard penalty, the Colts had the ball around midfield. Off the penalty, Rodgers dropped back to pass and hit a Greg Jennings who was streaking across the middle for a 15 yard gain. Daniel Thomas then gained 8 yards on 1st and 10 down to the 30 yard line and into FG range. On 2nd and 2, Rodgers dropped back to pass and looked for Ed Dickson on a seam pattern up the middle. Problem is that Quentin Mickell and had baited him into passing. He jumped the route and picked off the pass at the 24 yard line.

Off the interception, the Jags would finally get another lead as Drew Brees threw a perfect pass to Pierre Garcon’s back shoulder as he beat Chris Gamble on the coverage. The drive featured two big passes to Ladainian Tomlinson for 29 yards and two rushes by Sproles for 20 yards.

That would run down the clock to the 4th quarter and the Jags had a 24-17 lead. After trading punts, Rodgers hit Arrelious Benn on a short slant pass over the middle. He broke away and almost scored if it wasn’t for a last ditch diving tackle by Lardarius Webb at the 24 yard line. After a Rodger’s scramble for 9 yards, Ryan Grant picked up a 1st down at the 15 yard line. Then on 2nd at 6 at the 9 yard line, Rodgers found Roddy White on the sideline. He broke Webb’s tackle and score to tie up the game at 24-24 with 7:12 left in the 4th quarter.

The Jags did nothing on the next drive and the Colts took over with 6:34 left in the 4th quarter and only needed a FG for the win. At 2:35 left in the game, the Colts had driven down to the Jags 41 yard line and started nearing FG range. At that point, coach Golden realized that the FG was inevitable and started taking timeouts to preserve the clock. After the Jags’ first timeout, Daniel Thomas rushed for 3 yards to bring up 3rd and 3 at the Jags 34 yard line where the Jags called their second timeout with 2:31 left. On 3rd and 3, the Jags looked for a pass since the Colts still needed some yards to have a good chance at the FG. Despite looking for the pass, Rodgers was still able to complete the pass to Roddy White for 14 yards and a first down at the 20 yard line. Now, the Colts were in reasonable safe FG range with 2:22 left and they were forced to use their last timeout. All the Colts had to do was run the ball 3 times, pick up a few yards and kick a short FG. On 1st and 10 at the 20 yard line, Aaron Rodgers handed off to Daniel Thomas. Darryl Washington met him in the hole and held him as the Jags tried to tear the ball loose. Finally, the miracle happens...Demarcus Ware knocks out the ball and there is a mad scramble to pick it up as the Super Bowl rides in the balance. As players are pulled of the pile, players from both teams are pointing in their direction that they have the ball. Finally, everyone is cleared away and Ndamukong Suh comes out from the bottom of the pile with the ball, saving the game for the Jags.

Unfortunately, the Jags couldn’t carry the momentum into their next drive as they go 3 and out and were forced to punt the ball back to the Colts to give them yet another chance to win the game with a FG. The Colts took over at their own 32 yard line with 1:15 left and all 3 of their timeouts. Again the Jags defense would come up big. Rodgers looked for Roddy White on the sideline but the Jags doubled him. Lardarius Webb had tight coverage...he knocked up the ball and Rashean Mathis picked it off at the Jags 18 yard line.

After dominant 3rd by the Jags, the Colts came back with a dominant 4th but the Jags D came up big when it mattered and it went into overtime as the Brees kneeled down to run out the clock on the 4th quarter.

It was an unbelievable game up until this point as the game went into overtime tied at 24-24 with the fans being treated to a great game. The Jags started overtime with the ball with a Sproles 36 kickoff return to the Jags 35 yard line. During the short break before overtime, Coach Golden went up to Drew Brees and said “I’m putting the game in your hands as I have all year”. Drew Brees led the team on to the field and they huddled up at the 35 to prepare for a 1st and 10 play. The Jags came out in their basic offense with Pierre Thomas as the running back. With Jared Allen being so devastating early, the Jags went max protect as Drew Brees dropped back to pass. The offensive line gave him enough time to find Pierre Garcon with yet another back shoulder pass for a 15 yard gain to midfield. On the next play, the Colts had great coverage and the play broke down. Jared Allen was just about to sack Brees but he found Pierre Thomas for the dump off pass. He was hit immediately by Takeo Spikes but he spinned out of it and gained 14 yards for yet another first down at the Colts 36 yard line. The Colts then stopped a pass intended for Reggie Wayne on 1st down and stuffed Alex Smith for a yard loss on a dump off on 2nd down. That brought up 3rd and 11 at the Colts 37 yard line. The Jags came out in 3 wide with Sproles split out. It was a risk since Jared Allen had wreaked havok all game not to have him pass protection but the Jags were hoping to catch the Colts in a pass rush and get Sproles into empty space in the middle of the field. Brees dropped back to pas and it turned out exactly as they expected. Anthony Spencer blitzed and Brees hit Sproles over the middle. He dodged one tackler, then another and was finally taken down at the 9 yard line by Chris Gamble. That was it...the Jags could now run in the ball or just take a short conservative pass. As the coordinators argued about the play, coach Golden sent in the play. Tomlinson was on the field, in keeping with the expected play call. The Colts were in tight and had the run blitz on. Brees dropped back to pass, they triple teamed Jared Allen and Reggie Wayne broke free over the middle yet again, as he had all year for the Super Bowl winning touchdown.

Drew Brees and Reggie Wayne were named co-MVPs as they score the overtime, game-winning TD. Demarcus Ware gets honorable mention with the Super Bowl saving forced fumble. Darren Sproles also had a huge, great all-around game. He rushed 9 times for 55 yards and a TD. He also caught 7 passes for 70 yards including the breakaway catch for 28 yards to set up the game winning TD.

For the Colts, Jared Allen had a huge game early with 4 sacks and then was reduced to a few pressures as the Jags started focusing their pass protection on him. Aaron Rodgers, contrary to the 74 rating had a big game. He got the game tying score at 24-24 and converted first down after first down all game long. He also rushed for a TD. Despite a pick at the end of the 4th, he had driven the Colts into game-winning FG range when Daniel Thomas fumbled it away.

After the game, coach Golden was heard saying “GM Michael Dahan played a huge part in this Super Bowl winning season. He put together one heck of a team”. On the other side, Sri said that it was a heartbreaker. He was a big underdog but did all he could too win but ultimately he didn’t get the breaks. Congrats to Sri for calling a great game and a great season.

The Super Bowl win is the Jags’ franchise second, both coming in 19-0 perfect seasons.

The Jags are crowned ISFL champions and look over to defending their title next year. Thanks to all for a great season.
